Original Star Wars Early Bird Certificate commercial from 1977

1977 Star Wars
(Star Wars 1978-1979)

Limited Star Wars merchandise was available for several months after the film's debut. Kenner responded to the sudden demand for toys by selling boxed vouchers in its "empty box" Christmas 1977 campaign. Television commercials told children and parents that vouchers within a "Star Wars Early Bird Certificate Package" could be redeemed for toys "between February 1st and June 1st" of 1978.

The set of four figures included: Luke Skywalker (with double telescoping lightsaber), Princess Leia, R2-D2 and Chewbacca (with Green Crossbow). The set also included plastic foot pegs and a coupon for the action display stand.

1978 Star Wars
(Star Wars 1978-1979)

In 1978, tweleve Star Wars figures were released. The term "12-Back" refers to the first 12 figures shown on the back of the package. Early shipments may have had figure variants of Luke Skywalker, Ben Kenobi and Darth Vader with "Double Telescoping Lightsabers", they are extremely rare to find on card. The Jawa figure originally came with a "Vinyl Cape" and was quickly changed to a cloth cape.
Other notable variations include Han Solo (with large Head or Small Head) and Ben Kenobi (with Grey or White Hair).
