The Robotech Academy needs you via KickStarter!

Since its debut in 1985, I have always been a fan of the Robotech animated series. For those who grew up watching the series in the 80’s, many may share similar memories of rushing home after school just to catch the last half of each episode.

Robotech introduced us to an amazing storyline full of rich characters combined with cool transforming robots. It even touched on topics such as interracial relationships (remember, it was the 80's).

Robotech also reinforced the harsh realities dealing with death in the poignant episode titled “Farewell, Big Brother", which was one of the few times I cried as a kid over a cartoon character (ranking next to Bambi’s mom, and the death of Optimus Prime). The Robotech TV series was originally adapted from 3 Japanese animated television series (The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA), and it is considered one of the titles most responsible for igniting anime fandom in North America. Robotech would not have been possible without Carl Macek’s vision as the producer and story editor at Harmony Gold.

Carl Macek was a visionary, he even predicted “crowdfunding” back in 1995. In 2008, he came up with the idea for a new Robotech animated series: Robotech Academy, but the unfortunate passing of Carl Macek in 2010 took many by surprise, and shook fans in the Robotech community.

A New Robotech Series Is Coming. During a panel at Anime Expo 2014, Harmony Gold announced their plans to expand the classic 80s anime with a Kickstarter campaign! With Macek's notes, outlines, including some partially completed scripts, “Harmony Gold is looking to turn Macek's unfinished project into the series he dreamed of.” Harmony Gold is asking for half-a-million dollars on Kickstarter to produce a 22-minute pilot episode for Robotech Academy.

Within 24 hours of the announcement, the Kickstarter campaign raised over $55,000 with 956 backers. The momentum continues to rise with the goal of raising $500,000 by Aug 8 2014. There are many incentives that are offered in the campaign, from receiving a DVD copy of the pilot, naming your own character (in the English language release of the pilot), to being immortalized on the screen (as an animated character)! This is a chance to be a part of Robotech history, and hopefully we can help make this vision a reality.
